CORAL REEFS

  • Coral reefs are created by many tiny animals called coral polyps. Often mistaken as sea anemone, coral polyps secrete hard external skeleton, also known as ‘corallite’ that build up over time and form the base of a complex reef habitat that supports the world’s highest level of marine biodiversity. Coral reefs cover only less than 1% of the ocean floor, yet, are among the most productive and diverse ecosystems on Earth. They may take in a variety of shapes and colors from round, folded brain corals, staghorn corals, encrusting plate form to tall, elegant sea whips and sea fans. Corals are also listed as priority species under WWF ; one of which has the most ecologically, economically and / or culturally important species on the planet. Hence, it is our job to ensure that this species is able to live and thrive in their natural habitat.
