VALUE

  • Coral reefs are critical habitat on which many marine organisms depend on. They also perform a variety of important ecosystem services and are both directly and indirectly involved in the sustainability of livelihoods that depend on the ocean to live. Within Southeast Asia, its 100, 000 km2 of coral reefs are home to over 600 of the 800 reef building coral species in the world, out of which its reef fisheries alone are estimated to yield US $2.4 billion annually.
